DINA

Plaque location: 482 Hamburg Rd, Lyme Public Library

Only three records document Dina’s life in Lyme. At age 21 she was listed in the estate inventory of Samuel Selden (1695-1745) and appraised at 100 pounds. Her circumstances over the next 70 years are not known, but as a young woman she likely provided domestic labor for Selden, who owned extensive acreage, called Twelve Mile Island Farm, that included a cove along the Connecticut River, agricultural land, a sawmill, and a prosperous fishery. Town records and the records of Lyme’s third church both note Dina’s death from old age and other debility in 1811 when she was “about 90.”

Research into the lives of those enslaved in Lyme is ongoing and sometimes uncovers new details that may not have been known when the stone was installed. The text on this page reflects the most current information.
